Silver Stone Castle takes another ‘major step’ toward opening. What’s going on at Swansea site

SWANSEA — You’ve watched it slowly take shape turret by turret, anxiously awaiting a summons to the massive castle making a home on Route 6.

While an opening date has yet to be announced, Silver Stone Castle and Family Entertainment did share some “big news” this week, and the realm is rejoicing.

Owner Joe Estrela announced the medieval-themed entertainment complex is moving another step closer to its debut, recruiting local knights and maidens to join them on their journey.

“After hundreds of messages, emails and tons of other inquiries, Silver Stone Castle and Family Entertainment has FINALLY moved into beginning our hiring phase,” reads a post on Silver Stone’s Facebook page on Friday, Aug. 28.

‘This is going to be a castle’: What’s in store for this Swansea entertainment complex

“This is a major step forward to lowering the castle’s drawbridge and welcoming you ALL to what is surely going to be a true landmark in the Southcoast area and beyond!”

Silver Stone quest began 5 years ago

Construction of the 87,000-square-foot family fun center at 358 G.A.R. Highway has been roughly five years in the making.

Estrela acquired the property in April 2019, eyeing an anticipated July 2020 opening. That date was pushed to fall of 2022, he told The Herald News in a December 2021 interview.

Silver Stone has offered sneak peeks of its progress at various points in the construction process on its Facebook page.

This past July, Silver Stone shared an update stating: “We recognize that many of you have been anxiously awaiting the opening of Silver Stone Castle. Though we still don’t have that specific date as of yet, what we can tell you is construction is plugging along.”

What can we expect there?

According to its website, the facility will boast “something for everyone both young and those young at heart.”

Highlights include an interactive go-kart race track, a large arcade, VR (virtual reality) gaming room, indoor rock climbing, and an indoor “resort-style pool” that will feature elaborate stonework, grottoes and caves, and moving water features.

It will offer multiple function rooms for parties, as well as a concession stand and full-service restaurant, the latter of which will feature family-friendly American fare with some Portuguese options.

Estrela has previously said it was his longtime desire to create an indoor “eatertainment” facility. A vacation in a former castle in Ireland helped inspire the medieval theme, with decor that will feature a 40-foot dragon sculpture and a 20-foot knight statue perfect for selfies.

How can I apply to work at Silver Stone?

Looking to be a part of the Silver Stone kingdom? Estrela is planning a job fair on Monday, Sept. 23, from 5 to 9 p.m. at Studio 59, which is located in nearby Target plaza at 581 G.A.R. Highway, Swansea.

Officials from the castle will hold on-the-spot interviews and field questions about Silver Stone.

When will we be able to visit the castle?

According to an interview that aired on WPRI-TV’s “The Rhode Show,” Estrela has targeted an early winter opening. Keep an eye on the Silver Stone Facebook page for updates.
