Ski hill, snowmobile business hopeful for a snowy winter

WATERTOWN, New York (WWNY) – This time two years ago, the North Country was covered in a blanket of white snow.

Now, there is barely any in the North Country but some businesses like Tuggers hope it does not last too long.

Tricia Garvin says last year was probably the worst she has seen with barely any snow for the season.

“This year we are hoping to get some snow and it stays on the ground and we get a lot of snowmobilers, said Garvin, owner of Tuggers.

While Tuggers is worried there’s no snow on the ground, the Dry Hill Ski Area believes that winter has just begun.

“It’s a fluke if we get big heavy snowstorms in November. We got one two years ago, the snow was gone in five days. This is normal, there’s no need to panic, this is just fall in the North Country,” said Dry Hill Ski Area Owner Boo Wells.

The ski area does have a backup plan if they get late in the season with no snow—they’ll just have to make their own snow.

“We can’t rely on that natural snow to get us going this time of year. That’s part of the reason why we are not so worried. Versus the man-made product, it is a lot more robust, it handles the temperature swings and the rain a lot better than the natural snow,” said Stewart Wells, Dry Hill SKi Area’s Assistant Manager.

While the ground may be snowless now, Dry Hill and Tuggers anticipate a successful winter season.
