Sky Unveils Huge Range Of TV Updates Coming To Entertainment OS
Sky TV, the U.K.-based provider of satellite and internet TV, has just announced a comprehensive series of updated features, coming soon. They include a new level of personalization, greater voice control and improvements to sporting channels.
Sky has been providing TV via satellite dishes for decades, but in 2021 it launched Sky Glass, touted as an all-in-one solution because it was a TV with powerful Dolby Atmos speaker and Sky built in, receiving its programming through the internet rather than a dish.
Many critics felt the new operating system, called Entertainment OS, was the highlight of the new TVs. So, next came Sky Stream, a streaming box with the same OS, ideal for those who didn’t want to swap the TV they had, thank you very much, but were attracted to Sky’s exceptionally wide range of content.
Since 2021, Sky has introduced more than 500 updates, the company says, and now there’s a raft of new stuff. Here are some of the new highlights (deep breath, there are a lot of them).
Personalized Viewing Suggestions
Sky’s suggestions of what to watch next have been improved. New movie recommendations are available now, based on what you’ve been enjoying, with suggestions across 30 different genres. A similar feature for TV shows is on its way.
Show Pages For Favorite Actors
A new cast and crew rail where you can see actors from the TV series or movie you’re watching. This lets you to come across everything they’ve ever been in and brings up new suggestions.
Sky Sports Main Event With Low Latency
If you’re watching live sports—one of Sky’s longtime standout specialties—you want to see it as close to live as possible, not a minute after the event. In the coming months, Low Latency will mean that the delay has been reduced by over 20 seconds, making it faster than many other streaming services, Sky says. This will come to Sky Sports Main Event first, then other Sky Sports channels later in the year.
Hello Sky, Rewind
This is a fan-favorite on Sky Q, the service which requires a satellite dish. It means you can rewind, or fast-forward using your voice and the words “Hello Sky, Rewind,” for instance, and it’s coming to Sky Glass and Sky Stream.
Other voice additions include the capability to find favorites on Amazon Music and ROXi using voice commands. And the command, “Hello Sky, add to playlist,” lets you add movies or shows to the things you want to watch later.
Sky Live
Sky Live is the neat smart camera addition for Sky Glass that lets you work out and receive feedback tailored to how you’re doing, or watch shows with friends and family watching on their Sky Glass TVs. And new motion games are on their way, including Basketball Knockout and Tennis Smash: Racketville, plus a two-player update to the very, very fun Starri music rhythm game.
Other updates include subtitles for Ultra HD content (currently available on HD), audio description will come to video on demand content, and Rotten Tomatoes ratings directly on screen to save you finding them out separately.
