Slippery Travel Concerns Continue into Tomorrow, with Snow Shower Chances Lingering in the Forecast
PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) – Good evening everyone and Happy New Year! We’ve seen messy travel in spots today with a mix of snow and rain showers working their way through the region. Temperatures were able to warm up this afternoon, which resulted in rain for most communities. Chillier air returns for most tonight, meaning re-freezing of surfaces and slippery travel are likely to start Thursday. Temperatures during the day tomorrow will struggle to warm up, meaning activity likely remains frozen, with slippery travel concerns lasting into tomorrow night. Chillier air builds in for the end of the week, along with drier weather.
Going hour by hour through the rest of tonight shows showers lightening in nature as the night progresses on. With temperatures cooling off, these showers will slowly transition back over to snow flakes as they wrap up in the early morning hours of Thursday. Lows tonight will hover around the freezing mark for many communities. Winds will be shifting into the west during the overnight hours, with the shift in wind direction resulting in colder air beginning to funnel into the region.
Tomorrow will still feature some snow showers, however the activity doesn’t look nearly as impressive as what we saw today. Snow showers will be scattered in nature, with warming temperatures resulting in some mixing and raindrops in some communities. Colder air is reinforced tomorrow evening as westerly winds become stronger. This will leave us with a chilly and unsettled end to the week, with low pressure still having an influence on the region going into Friday. Additional snowfall amounts range from a dusting to an inch of snow through southern and central Aroostook County. Accumulating snow is more likely through the St. John Valley and north Woods, with a few inches of measurable snow possible as this system exits the region going into Friday.
