Slow start

In beating Sheffield for the 13th straight time, first-place OEOV led 22-0 after one quarter and 44-0 at halftime to quiet a large contingent of Sheffield alumni and fans.

The Terrors (5-0 in the region) already defeated 1-3 Sheffield, 44-6, in the second game of the season, and jumped out to a 16-0 lead midway through the first quarter.

After OEOV quarterback Shane Magee threw the first of his four first-half touchdown passes, teammate Manning Splain did it on defense with a 65-yard interception return for a touchdown.

Three of Magee’s touchdown passes went to Ray’shene Thomas, including one with six seconds left in the first half.

It didn’t help that the Wolverines turned the ball over four times in the first half. OEOV recovered an onside kick right after the last TD pass, but Magee chose to kneel to run out the clock.

In the second half, “night and day difference,” according to Coach Barr.

Sheffield took the ball after halftime and drove down the field for the first of two Colby Barr rushing scores. He had a 39-yard touchdown run at 10:08 in the third and then a 10-yard score with 1:40 left in the quarter.

Barr had the better part of his 104 yards rushing in the second half, and Sheffield ran the ball better across the board.

Otto clipped Sheffield’s momentum on the ensuing 65-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and OEOV built the lead to 56-13 early in the fourth on sophomore Mason Schenfield’s first varsity touchdown pass.

“We just didn’t execute in the first and second quarters,” said Coach Barr. “We saw something on film and we thought we could take advantage of it. It worked; it just worked two quarters too late.”

Sheffield finished the game with three unanswered scores, but ran out of time. The game’s final play saw Cire Brown-House cross the goal line as the clock hit zero.

“I don’t know what the mind block is when we play Otto-Eldred,” said Coach Barr. “It’s there, but once they find out that those kids are human, we play with them.”

Both of Otto’s quarterbacks were efficient with the exception of Darrelle Barno’s acrobatic interception of Schenfield, Otto’s junior varsity quarterback who came in with a big lead. Magee finished 10 of 15 passing with 158 yards and the four first-half scores. Schenfield was 5 of 8 for 52 yards and a score.

With over 2,000 career receiving yards, Sheffield held OEOV’s Splain to 47 yards on three catches, but he did have a touchdown on defense. With over 2,000 career rushing yards, Sheffield held running back Hunter App to without a rushing score, but he did have 105 yards rushing, a receiving touchdown and two 2-point conversions.

Otto-Eldred/Oswayo Valley started 2-0, lost out of region to Kane, but has won three straight since.

“I think the loss to Kane made our guys focus much more on preparation,” said OEOV coach Troy Cook. “We have been very locked-in since then. We just hope we can keep the momentum going.”

‘Locked-in’ is exactly what Coach Barr wants from the Wolverines down the stretch.

“Very good second half to build off going into Cameron County,” said Coach Barr. “The town rally (Friday) night was amazing, the crowd (Saturday) was the biggest crowd I’ve seen for a Sheffield high school football game, I love it, the kids want it, they’ve just got to learn how to play in front of it. It’s a mindset thing because we’ve been down for so long and for so many years that this is all new to these guys. We’ve got three more games to go, and we’re going to have fun with them.”
