Small Business Saturday promises sales, deals across Springfield – Springfield Daily Citizen

The annual Small Business Saturday is set to take Springfield by storm Nov. 30, featuring sales and specials of all kinds hitting shelves across the Queen City.

From a downtown retail promotion to a market on historic Commercial Street, Small Business Saturday will encompass nearly every zone of Springfield. There were nearly 1,500 retail merchants across Springfield in 2022, according to data from the Springfield Regional Economic Partnership.

Small Business Saturday was created 15 years ago by American Express to promote sales at local, mom-and-pop retail outfits the day after Black Friday. The credit card company says the unofficial holiday has generated $200 billion in sales.

The Downtown Springfield Association is hosting a Small Business Saturday promotion. On Nov. 30, customers will get an “I Shopped Small” sticker with a purchase at any downtown retail location. Customers who snap a photo with the sticker and post it using #ShopSmallSGF can visit the History Museum on the Square the same day between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. to claim a prize.

Pagination Bookshop – The Springfield bookshop features multiple sales for its Small Business Saturday event, including $15 off any purchase of $100 or more and 20% off on puzzles and box sets. Customers can snag a Pagination mug for $10. The bookstore will be open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 30.

J.L. Long Traders – The downtown home goods store will have a celebration on Small Business Saturday with holiday items and treats for sale by baker Sydney Johnson. All purchases at the store will be 15% off, and the company will donate 15% of all sales to Isabel’s Tree to benefit the organization Isabel’s House.

BookMarx – The downtown bookshop will feature deals on Saturday, Nov. 30. Used books will be 20% off and customers can get a 10% discount on all new books.

The 7th on Walnut took an interesting approach to Small Business Saturday: It closed for the day. The downtown restaurant took to Facebook to write out a poem on the woes of the holiday. The first verse reads:

Oh, Small Business Saturday, what a mess,
The day after Black Friday’s corporate fest.
“Support local shops!” the slogans proclaim,
But who’s behind it? Big Corp’s to blame.
