Saturday, the day after many shop at the large stores for holiday gifts and discounts, is Small Business Saturday.
Attleboro area business advocates such as downtown business associations and chambers of commerce are urging residents to support local shops and restaurants Saturday but also throughout the holiday season and coming year.
“We don’t just support Small Business Saturday, we support Small Business Season” through the end of December, said Jack Lank, president of the United Regional Chamber of Commerce, which represents many area businesses.
“Massachusetts’ economy rests on the backs of its small businesses,” said Christopher Carlozzi, state director for the National Federation of Independent Business. “While state lawmakers may focus their attention on big industries like pharma, green energy, and high tech, most businesses in their districts are small businesses, and they employ more than 44 percent of Massachusetts’ workforce.”
It’s estimated that 67 cents of every dollar spent at a small business stays in the community.
“Every dollar people spend at a local small business helps sustain and strengthen our hometowns,” Carlozzi added. “Shopping small also provides access to first-class service, unique products, and a chance to connect directly with an owner who’s eager to make you a regular customer.”
Founded in 2010 by American Express and co-sponsored by the Small Business Association in 2011, Small Business Saturday promotes the benefits of shopping at smaller establishments.
It falls between Black Friday, a popular day for shopping at big box retailers, and Cyber Monday, which focuses on online shopping.
