Snow and Rain Arrives During the Day Tomorrow, with Slippery Travel Concerns Lasting into Thursday

PRESQUE ISLE, Maine (WAGM) – Good evening everyone and happy Tuesday. We ended up with a better day across the county today with more sunshine than I originally anticipated. Cloud cover filled back in late this afternoon ahead of our next system, which looks to bring snow and possible rain showers to the forecast tomorrow and into the day Thursday. The latest computer model runs shows a colder solution for Wednesday, meaning snow showers are more likely to linger during the afternoon hours.

Going hour by hour through the rest of tonight shows cloud cover increasing, if it hasn’t done so already. With clouds in place overnight tonight, temperatures aren’t expected to cool off much, as the cloud cover acts as a blanket across the region in insulating warmer temperatures. Lows tonight are expected to fall back into the upper 20s for most areas. With temperatures falling back below freezing, any locations that still have wet surfaces or ponding will likely refreeze, resulting in some slippery surfaces tomorrow morning. While the sunshine today did a good job of drying up a lot of surfaces, isolated slick spots are still possible to start New Year’s Day.

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Weather Advisory for Northwest Aroostook County beginning tomorrow morning, and lasting through Thursday afternoon. The highest snowfall amounts from this system are expected over this portion of the county, resulting in the greatest chance of slippery travel. I still think everyone will likely experience slick travel at some point between now and Thursday afternoon, but the best chance of seeing impacts will be the north woods back through the St. John Valley, as well as portions of the Route 11 corridor.

Snowfall amounts will range from a couple of heavy wet inches of snow over southern portions of Aroostook county, with jackpot amounts falling over northern and western areas. As much as a half foot of heavy wet snow is possible for some communities in the St. John Valley by Thursday afternoon. Central Aroostook will be split between the two amounts, with a few inches of snow likely measured by Thursday afternoon. Right now with temperatures climbing into the mid 30s, I wouldn’t be surprised if raindrops mix in with this activity, especially by the afternoon hours tomorrow. As temperatures cool off tomorrow night, additional snow showers look more likely to occur going into Thursday morning.
