Snow will create slick travel conditions across CNY ahead of Christmas: Winter Weather Advisory posted | Fingerlakes1.com
Travelers across the Finger Lakes and Central New York should prepare for slick roads and potentially hazardous driving conditions as a clipper system brings widespread snowfall to the region tonight into Tuesday morning.
According to the National Weather Service, snowfall will begin late Monday and continue overnight, with accumulations ranging from 1 to 3 inches in most areas and up to 6 inches in higher elevations, particularly near the Tug Hill Plateau and northern Oneida County. A Winter Weather Advisory has been issued for several counties, including Cayuga, Onondaga, Madison, Herkimer, and Lewis, through Tuesday afternoon.
The heaviest snow is expected between midnight and daybreak Tuesday, with snowfall rates occasionally reducing visibility and creating slippery conditions during the morning commute. Motorists are urged to allow extra time for travel, reduce speeds, and remain cautious on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.
Conditions are expected to improve by Tuesday afternoon as snow tapers off to scattered lake-enhanced flurries. Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are forecast to be calm and dry, with temperatures remaining below freezing, ensuring a white Christmas for most of the region.
Looking ahead, a gradual warming trend is expected later in the week, with temperatures potentially climbing into the 40s by the weekend. However, another weather system could bring rain and unsettled conditions by Saturday night or Sunday.
