Snowmass’ first neighborhood shopping center
As reported in The Aspen Times on Sept. 21, 1978, “The Snowmass Center, Snowmass’ first neighborhood shopping center, is presently under construction and scheduled for completion on March 1, 1979. Present plans call for the center to house the town’s Post Office, bank, pharmacy and drug store, liquor store, retail arcade shops, and a number of professional and medical offices. Prior to acquiring his Minturn supermarket in 1967 and starting the Village Market in Vail in 1968, [John] Buxman worked 20 years for a national chain serving as district manager and store manager. Buxman relayed, ‘I’m very excited about the future of the town of Snowmass and extremely pleased to be a part of that growing community.’ Buxman continued, ‘What we are trying to do in Snowmass is to give the Snowmass residents and visitors alike a supermarket-type operation with a large variety of merchandise and brands. We plan on offering choice meats or better and a large selection of fresh fruits and vegetables. In addition, we will maintain a fresh bakery on the premises.’”
