NEW LONDON — Sō Percussion — a New York-based percussion quartet and nonprofit organization known for fostering, creating and presenting adventurous new work with a unique focus on collaboration — will perform at Connecticut College’s Evans Hall in Cummings Arts Center Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
With a style described by the New Yorker as an “exhilarating blend of precision and anarchy, rigor and bedlam,” Sō Percussion has captivated audiences worldwide with their innovative repertoire that merges classical music, indie rock, and theater which creates a compelling soundscape through inventive instrumentation and a unique approach to live performance.
The quartet, known for producing an immersive experience that emphasizes music as a core form of human expression, state on their website that they are “fueled by a belief in the unifying power of music.”
“Sō Percussion brings the joy, curiosity, and inherent connectivity of percussion in all its forms to an ever broader audience,” according to the website, which also notes that “Sō Percussion is dedicated to fostering an equitable and sustainable musical ecosystem. This includes initiatives to program a diverse range of voices, commission flexible new works, and create better pipelines for our educational programs.”
“We are especially interested in finding new ways to include collaborators from outside the realm of classical music, and to incorporate practices that stimulate and enrich the percussion medium,” the website says.
