SALT LAKE CITY — CBS Sports anchor and commentator Greg Gumbel died after a battle with cancer at the age of 78 on Friday. Gumbel spent over 50 years in broadcasting, notably becoming the voice of the NCAA Selection Show for the college basketball tournament in March.

We look back at some of the best calls and moments in Gumbel’s career, including some with local ties.

One of the best calls in Utah Jazz history, and the most memorable for those in Utah is when John Stockton hit a 3-pointer to defeat the Rockets in Game 6 of the Western Conference Finals to send the Jazz to the NBA Finals for the first time in history.

His words, “John Stockton sends the Utah Jazz to the NBA Finals,” can be repeated by any Jazz fan without missing a beat.

March Madness: Utah as No. 5 seed

Gumbel acknowledges the Utes’ celebration after winning the conference tournament.

Some of Gumbel’s most iconic calls without Utah ties are as follows.

Some fans say this is their favorite Gumbel call ever, highlighting a great play by Jacoby Jones who also passed earlier this year. “Flacco stepping up and throwing deep down the far sideline … caught! Touchdown Jacoby Jones!”

After joining CBS in 1989, Gumbel’s voice was the introduction to the show on Selection Sunday ahead of March Madness.
