SOMERSET ― Have a little trouble keeping your balance? Feeling a little unsteady on your feet? Here’s a class to help you strengthen those skills.

Crystal Reiber, a retired Certified Fitness Trainer, leads participants in ways to improve and keep strength, balance, range of motion and flexibility each week during a Strength & Mobility Class. It is held at 10 a.m. every Tuesday at Somerset Church of the Brethren, 606 Berlin Plank Road, Somerset.

Reiber said she saw a need for the class and decided to take it on.

“I led a fitness ministry before, but life got busy and I kind of lost focus,” she said. “I felt like I had no purpose. I prayed about it. I know there’s a need in the community.”

Reiber started the class May 6. It uses no special equipment, but puts participants through exercises for strength, balance, range of motion and flexibility. Reiber said these are all elements to keep a person independent.

“It’s for anyone who wants to attend, not just church members,” she said about this fitness ministry. “It’s for people with balance issues and nerve disorders. The target group is 60 and plus years of age, but anyone is welcome.”

There is no cost and participants don’t have to register to take the class. But Reiber asks participants to sign in at the class so they can be included in a phone chain in case there’s a class cancelation or a notice needs to be sent out to those who attend.

“Come dressed for exercise and wear rubber-soled shoes,” she said. “Work within your own limits. If you get tired or it’s too much, you can stop.”

Reiber said the class averages about 20-25 people a week.

“I was overwhelmed with the response,” she said. “We’ll run it as long as people want it to. The last one I ran went 13 years.”
