South Bend Schools launching elementary sports program

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – The South Bend Community School Corporation is launching an athletics program for students in grades 2-5 across all its elementary schools.

The move comes after the district says it successfully piloted wrestling and basketball programs at its elementary schools. Soccer and track programs will be introduced this summer and youth tackle football will be implemented in the fall.

The district believes the early introduction of athletic programs will help students develop physical and social skills, build confidence and self-esteem, and learn valuable life skills. South Bend school leaders also think it could help boost enrollment numbers.

“We see athletics as a significant part of not just stabilizing, but ultimately assisting the district in growing enrollment,” said Milt Lee, director of community programs and K-12 athletics. “We believe we will achieve this goal by providing athletic opportunities to children at a young age and building strong relationships with our high school, middle school and elementary school students.”

According to the district, almost 600 students already participate in programs throughout all its elementary schools.
