South Carolina ties for 4th for workers calling in sick to watch sports
COLUMBIA, S.C. – South Carolina is one of the country’s leaders in an interesting topic.
According to a survey conducted by online gambling company Betway, South Carolina tied for fourth place among the states that skip work to watch sports the most, with 65% of people admitting they’ve done this.
The survey, while not proven fact, may have some merit.
In March, USC women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley wrote a sick note excusing fans from work because the team “simply can’t do it without our FAMS,” according to the note.
The survey was conducted with 2,000 Americans to find out which sports events they have called out sick for, which states are guilty of this the most, and which life events they are willing to miss to watch an important game.
The top 10 states are:
- Utah, 78%
- Colorado, 70%
- Maryland, 67%
- South Carolina, California and Texas (tie), 65%
- Kansas, 64%
- Illinois, 63%
- Florida and Tennessee (tie), 62%
Approximately 57% of U.S. employees admit to calling in sick to watch a sporting event, with the Super Bowl being the most popular event people skip work.
In Kansas, half of respondents (50%) said they got into trouble at work — or got fired — for calling out sick to watch a sports game.
