South Korea orders travel ban for President Yoon – Times of India
South Korea on Monday ordered a travel ban for President Yoon Suk Yeol, who is under investigation for his declaration of martial law last week, reported Reuters citing Yonhap news agency.
Yoon, last week, announced temporary martial law of martial law last Tuesday, deploying armed special forces in Seoul, causing considerable political turmoil.
Later, the South Korean opposition initiated impeachment against him. However, he survived it as members of the ruling party largely abstained from voting, preventing the necessary two-thirds majority.
Although current presidents typically have prosecution immunity, this protection excludes charges of rebellion or treason.
The opposition democratic party has filed police reports against individuals, including Yoon and the former defence minister, citing allegations of rebellion. The authorities on Sunday detained former defence minister Kim Yong Hyun.
Additionally, the officials also removed three high-ranking military commanders suspected of participating in the martial law implementation.
Meanwhile, President Yoon expressed regret for the decision on Saturday, while accepting his legal and political responsibility.
Yoon, who began his single five-year term in 2022, has struggled to implement his policies due to an opposition-controlled parliament, diminished public support, and controversies involving himself and his spouse.
