SANDY, Utah — Smith Entertainment Group announced the purchase of The Shops at South Town in Sandy City. According to a press release, the group purchased all 111 acres.

Eventually, the location will act as the training facility for the new National Hockey League Franchise. Completion of the Utah Hockey Club’s new space is slated for 2025.

According to a press release, The Shops at South Town will stay open for business.

The “state-of-the-art” facility will be built on southeast end of the mall and include at least two NHL-standard regulation ice surfaces, the press release said.

Additionally, SEG plans to make the space available for community purposes such as youth and amateur hockey and recreation according to the release.

Impacts on South Town Mall and Sandy City

Sandy City Mayor Monica Zoltanski joined Dave and Dujanovic to discuss today’s announcement.

“… the economic impact to our local economy is going to be immense, pro sports are great for local economies. This is going to be great for Sandy. Just this week, Sandy was named the 22nd top city in America for families,” Zoltznski said.

“And having an NHL practice facility is completely aligned with our family culture and Sandy it’s going to not only create a business catalyst for the South Towne Mall and the whole surrounding area, but it’s going to be great for our local community.”
