Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute tribes looking to offer online sports betting, facing pushback from State

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) – The Southern Ute and Ute Mountain Ute tribes want to offer online sports betting, but a dispute with the state is hindering their efforts.

Some fear allowing tribal remote sports betting could divert tax revenue from crucial water projects.

Currently, Colorado’s sports betting law caps state tax revenues at $29 million. A November ballot proposition could lift this cap, potentially increasing funds for water programs. Tribal casinos seek inclusion but face challenges due to their tax-exempt status, which could reduce state revenue for these projects.

Lawmakers plan to address the issue this summer, but previous attempts to resolve the dispute have failed.
