Spirit Lake building is a total loss after a fire Tuesday morning

SPIRIT LAKE, Iowa (KTIV) – A building in Spirit Lake, Iowa is a total loss after a fire broke out early Tuesday morning.

Spirit Lake Fire Chief Pat Daly says crews were sent out at about 3:15 a.m. on May 14 to the Great Lakes Marine, a local boat dealership. According to Daly, someone driving by the building saw smoke coming out of the building and contacted the fire department.

Daly says flames were coming out of the roof when firefighters got to the building. Assistance was called in from Arnolds Park and Montgomery, and an excavator was brought in to tear down parts of the roof.

The fire caused extensive damage with authorities saying the building and the boats inside are a total loss.

Nobody was inside the building at the time of the fire.

The fire is still being investigated but officials say the amount of damage has made it difficult to determine what caused it.
