Sports Around the Lowcountry: Local athletes to compete in 2024 Touchstone Energy Bowl
Several local student athletes have been named to the 2024 Touchstone Energy Bowl roster and will compete in the upcoming Touchstone Energy Cooperatives (North/South) Bowl.
South Carolina’s finest high school football players will take the field at the annual Touchstone Energy Bowl, which kicks off at noon on Saturday, Dec. 21, at Doug Shaw Memorial Stadium in Myrtle Beach.
Athletes from Beaufort and Hampton counties named to the South team roster are:
- Outside linebacker William Bonneville, of May River High School
- Wide receiver Derrick Smalls, of Battery Creek High School
- Outside linebacker Mandrell Sanders, of Hampton County High School
At halftime, one player from the entire roster will receive the 2024 Mr. Football award, the state’s highest prep sports honor.

Patrick Henry Academy Volleyball team wins Lower State title, competes for 3A State Championship
After clinching the S.C. Independent School Association (SCISA) 3A Region IV Championship, the Patrick Henry Academy Lady Patriots advanced to the Lower State Championship tournament held in Myrtle Beach, defeating Spartanburg Christian Academy and Orangeburg Prep on Saturday, Oct. 19, to clinch the Lower State Championship.
The Lady Patriots then advanced to the SCISA Class 3A State Championship, taking on the Presbyterian Academy at Shannon Forest on Tuesday, Oct. 22, at Cardinal Newman School in Columbia. PHA was defeated and finished the 2024 season as the state title runners up.
JPII swimmers state championship results
John Paul II Catholic School Varsity Swimming attended the 2024 SCISA State Championship on Oct. 12 in Charleston. The school was one of 27 schools participating in the competition, with nearly 300 swimmers from around SC entered.
Senior Swimmer Cypress Daniel was one of several celebrated during the senior recognition ceremony. The competition was solid, and John Paul’s Swimming Warriors brought strength, endurance, and power to the championship finale.
Results for SCISA 4A Schools Division
The JPII Warriors Girls Team Ranked 14 overall of 27 SCISA participating schools. The following are the results from the JPII swimmers:
200 Medley Relay: Winslow, Daniel – C, McGoldrick, Daniel – A – came in 6th place overall at 2:11.24, dropping over 5 seconds.
200 Freestyle Relay: Daniel-A, Hannagan, Waite-Kerns, McGoldrick – came in 10th place overall at 2:01.36.
400 Freestyle Relay: Winslow, Hannagan, Waite-Kerns, Daniel-C – came in 5th place overall at 4:33.49 – (dropping over 13 seconds)
Lady Warriors – Individual Events
Cypress Daniel came in 2nd in her heat for the 50 Freestyle (28.10), placing 8th overall and 13th overall in her 100 Breaststroke (1:26.93).
Riley McGoldrick came in first in her heat in the 100 Butterfly, placing 6th overall (1:09.50), dropping almost 4 seconds. She was also 2nd in her heat for the 200 Freestyle (2:19.24), placing 7th overall, again dropping over 4 seconds.
Delilah Waite-Kerns placed 15th overall in her 50 Freestyle (30.12) and 14th in her 100 Freestyle (1:07.40), dropping over 2 seconds combined.
Anson Daniel came in first in her heat in the 100 Breaststroke (1:24.41), dropping over 5 seconds and placing 8th overall. She also placed 17th in her 50 Freestyle (30.39).
Nel Winslow came in 3rd in her heat for the 100 Breaststroke, placing 14th overall (1:29.06), dropping over a second. She also placed 8th overall in her 100 Backstroke (1:14.93).
Sofie Hannagan came in 2nd in her heat for the 50 Freestyle (31.10), placing 24th overall. She was also 2nd in her heat for the 100 Breaststroke (1:33.53), placing 19th overall, dropping over 2 seconds combined.
Gentleman Warriors – Individual Events
Leo Iskandar placed 34th of 44 swimmers in his 50 Freestyle (28.92)
Beau Ryan came in 2nd in his heat for 50 Freestyle (29.77), placing 36th overall out of 44 swimmers and 28th overall in his 100 Freestyle (1:09.06).
Brinson Brosman came in 2nd in his heat for the 100 Backstroke (1:14.65), placing 14th overall. He also placed number 33 out of 44 swimmers in his 50 Freestyle (28.84).
Young Hampton County High School Cross Country advances
As Lower State and State competitions loom ahead, a young Hampton County High School Hurricane Cross Country squad is advancing in experience, speed and rankings.
The S.C. High School League Class 2A rankings, released Oct. 13, ranked the HCHS Girls at 6th out of 26 teams in 2A, with the Hurricane Boys ranked 11th out of 34 teams. In many meets this season, Hampton County runners have finished in the top spots in both the boys and girls contests.
“We are a young team with only two seniors,” said HCHS Coach Myrriah Hanna. “The majority of the team are returners (have run for more than one year). I have been very impressed with my 8th graders and have seen so many improvements in them from last year.”
