Sports briefs: Novato football team rolls to second win
Dominic Scafani caught a touchdown pass and returned an interception for another score as the Novato High football team cruised to a 47-0 road win at San Jose High on Saturday night.
The Hornets (2-1) led 34-0 at the half and played with a running clock throughout the fourth quarter. Alex Felchin, John DeMartini, and Alvin De Leon all ran for first-half touchdowns. Sal Carrow and Scafani caught touchdowns in the first half.
CJ Castro caught a touchdown pass from Trevor Cleary in the second half then Scafani capped the scoring with his pick six.
The Hornets open Redwood Empire Mountain play next week with a road game Saturday afternoon against Archie Williams. Former MCAL foes San Rafael and Terra Linda also compete in the Mountain League.
- Redwood took a seven-point lead into the fourth quarter but host Enterprise came alive with three touchdowns over the final 9 minutes to emerge with a 34-21 victory. The Giants (2-2) are set to open Redwood Empire Valley play at 7 p.m. on Friday night at Petaluma.
Girls volleyball
Marin Catholic posted a 4-0 record at the Chris Chandler Invitational at Menlo School, winning the tournament on Saturday. MC (14-4) didn’t drop a set while defeating Aragon and Menlo Atherton in the early rounds, then Valley Christian in the semifinals and Harbor in the championship game.
MC was led by Carolina Delaney (31 kills), Krystal Rose Huff (30 kills), and Grace Basso (23 kills). Sierra Ellison had 39 digs while Huff also had 30 digs. Kate Schraeder had six aces.
- San Rafael had a strong showing at the Tam tournament, picking up wins against San Domenico and Terra Linda en route to to a semifinal appearance against the hosts. The victory over TL was the first in four years for the Bulldogs, who lost in three sets to Archbishop Riordan and in two close sets — both 25-23 — against eventual champion Tam. Olivia Dugan had 43 digs during the tournament. Elsa Kehoe had 34 total kills, including 11 against Tam and 10 against TL.
- Terra Linda went 3-2 at the Tam tournament, registering wins against Petaluma, Dixon and Colusa with losses to San Rafael and Riordan. The Trojans (14-6) got 63 digs and nine aces from Mia Patino, 44 digs and 45 kills from Josie Campo, and 26 kills and 14 digs from Sierra Treewater.
Girls cross country
Audrey Spaly turned in the best time of the day to lead Branson to a pair of league-opening wins against Marin Catholic and Terra Linda earlier in the week. Spaly crossed the finish line in 19 minutes, 13 seconds on the 3.05-mile course at Crown Road. Branson defeated MC 19-42 and beat TL 15-50. MC’s Gabby Hays was second fastest in 20:23 to help the Wildcats post a 15-50 win against the Trojans.
Branson runners rounded out the top six with Farah Allen (20:36), Maya Gidney (21:10), Imogen Brown (21:26), and Madison Polsky (22:09).
