Sports Briefs: Pacifics return home to get back to winning ways
The San Rafael Pacifics found comfort at home as they snapped a two-game skid Thursday night with an 11-2 victory over the Vallejo Seaweed at Albert Park. The Pacifics were coming off a 1-2 road trip. Righthander Xavier Stewart, making his first start of the season after four relief appearances, went the distance as he struck out 11 batters and gave up just six hits.
San Rafael’s Mark Hernandez continued his recent hot streak with a 3-for-5 night, giving him 28 hits in his last 47 at bats over 10 games. The Pacifics’ Jakob Bouhuys was 3-for-4, while left fielder John Bicos and shortstop Braxton King each had two hits. The Pacifics (13-4) lead the Pecos League Pacific Division standings, as they wrap up their current homestead with games Saturday and Sunday against Dublin and Marysville.
• The Novato Knicks (5-8) wrap up a three-game set in Arcata with games against the Humboldt Crabs on Saturday and Sunday. The Knicks are scheduled to host TKB Baseball on June 29 at San Marin High.
Track and field
San Rafael’s Ellie McCuskey-Hay of the Marin Waves Track Club finished eighth in 11.82 seconds in the finals of the Under-20 US Championships in Eugene, Oregon, on Wednesday evening, narrowly missing a bid for the US World Championships in Peru. The top six finishers Wednesday qualified for the world championships.
Golf
Tamalpais Golf Club member Stephen Mori-Prange reported a rare albatross in Mill Valley on Monday. Put the binoculars away bird watchers. Mori-Prange hit one of golf’s rarest feats with a hole-in-one on the par 4 sixth hole at Monday at Mill Valley Golf Course. He used a three wood on the 252-yard hole for his first hole-in-one. The odds of shooting 3-under par on a single hole are calculated at 6 million to 1, making an albatross an unusual accomplishment.
