Sports briefs: Tam duo qualifies for golf state tournament

Tam High’s Ben Friedman and Hayden Thill both qualified for the CIF State boys golf championship, to be held next Wednesday at San Gabriel Country Club.

Friedman led Tam with a 2-under 70 at Berkeley Country Club to take a fifth-place tie during Monday’s NorCal boys golf championship. Friedman, the MCAL Player of the Year, birdied the par-4 fourth and seventh holes, and the 501-yard, par-5 eighth hole.

Tam tied for seventh (31-over 391) in the team standings, buoyed by a strong showing from Thill, who shot a 1-over 73 to finish in a three-way tie for 10th in the individual standings. The Red-tailed Hawks’ Abe Willard shot a 79 to finish in a five-way tie for 41st, and Max Berg (82) tied for 54th. Paxton Miller (87) at 71st, and Jack McIntire (90) tied for 76th rounded out Tam’s lineup.

Stevenson (11-over 371) won the team competition, while De La Salle’s Josh Kim was the individual winner at 4-under.

Mountain biking

Redwood High’s Scout Wellmeier claimed the varsity girls individual championship and the Giants won the Division I team championship at the NorCal Interscholastic Cycling League’s championship on Sunday in Lower Lake.

Redwood’s Matthew Marotto, who won every race in which he competed during the regular season, placed fourth in the varsity boys race at Six Sigma Winery on Sunday, leading a strong Marin County contingent of riders on the trail.

Wellmeier led the entire race to finish in 1:41:55.26, nearly 1 minute, 40 seconds ahead of runner up Camille Smith of Rio Americano. The Giants’ Charlotte Philkill placed seventh (1;53:07.95), followed by teammates Izzy Landry in ninth (1:55:41.16) and Ginger Howard in 20th (2:08:47.87). Other notable local finishes in the varsity girls race included: Tam’s Johannah Nesbit in 14th place (1:59:24.50) and San Domenico’s Quinn Joyce in 16th (1:59:59.58).

Marotto was the leader of the pack on the last of the four laps around the course when his chain broke. Marotto was able to make the needed repairs and still finish on the podium in 1:29:17.57, less than 4 minutes off the winning time by El Cerrito’s Yoann Perrodin.

Archie Williams’ Simon Hewett placed fifth (1:29:30.55) with teammates Noah Bott (28th, 1:39:32.51), Oliver Janson-Smith (30th, 1:40:56.98) and Alden McCarthy (31st, 1:40:59.30) also finishing in the top half of the 63-rider field.

Zachary Redlin of the Branson School took 15th place (1:33:46.38), ahead of San Marin’s Te’ah Hirschfeld in 16th (1:34;18.75). Other notable local finishes included: Tam teammates Jacob Camposano (20th, 1:36:02.86) and Jack Dauphinais (25th, 1:38:17.73), Marin Academy’s Matisse Buckley (21st, 1:36:15.10), and the Mustangs’ Kieran Sanctuary (27th, 1:39:11.95).

The Giants topped the Division I standings, followed by Berkeley, Tam, El Cerrito and Archie Williams, respectively. San Domenico placed fourth in the Division II standings, with Marin Academy eighth.

Double Dipsea

Registration for the Double Dipsea begins at noon, Tuesday, May 21. The entry fee is $175 through www.raceroster.com. The 54th annual running of the race is scheduled for Saturday, August 24, at 7 a.m.
