Sports briefs: Tam outlasts San Rafael in 14-inning marathon
Hugo Barbarie kept his team in the game with an RBI single in the bottom of the 12th inning then later provided the walk-off hit in the 14th as the Tam High baseball team outlasted San Rafael for a 6-5 victory Thursday.
The first nine innings of the game were played on April 5 before it was postponed due to darkness with the scored tied at 4-4.
San Rafael (5-13, 3-8 MCAL) inched in front when Floyd Greene hit an RBI groundout in the top of the 12th for a 5-4 lead. Tam (11-7, 8-3) moved into a second-place tie with Novato and sits two games behind Redwood in the loss column before traveling to Larkspur to face the Giants on Friday.
Barberie was the lone Tam player to record two hits in the extended game. Jack Hanna started the game on the mound two weeks ago and pitched 7.2 innings. Tam used five relievers with Jackson Van Til pitching the last two innings.
Marcos Tolliver pitched the first six innings on April 5, striking out 11 hitters. Lazlo Clements came on in relief then and worked the next 7.1 innings, throwing 132 pitches in the process.
- Cole Chamberlain hit a three-run homer to give San Marin some breathing room in the seventh inning in a 5-2 win against Vintage Thursday. Chamberlain’s blast gave the Mustangs (11-7) an 5-1 lead before Vintage played one run in the bottom of the frame. San Marin starter Tyler Keehn worked six innings, allowing three hits while striking out seven.
- Alex Tavano had three hits, including two triples, and drove in two runs but San Domenico was unable to keep up with University, falling 12-4 on Thursday. The Red Devils scored three runs in the second, third, fourth, and sixth innings. Sam Tavano added two hits for the Panthers (3-5, 1-3 BCL West).
College baseball
College of Marin’s eight-game win streak came to a halt in Solano as the Mariners fell 13-3 on Thursday. Solano scored five runs in the third inning and six more in the fifth to race out to an 11-0 lead.
Former Tam High standout Matteo Bellisimo had two RBIs for COM (25-11, 14-3 Bay Valley), which is one game ahead of Solano (23-12, 13-4) for second place. First-place Los Medanos (26-9, 15-2) has won 14 games in a row and plays COM three times to close the regular season next week.
Prep tennis
San Rafael’s Christine Costamagna was selected as the recipient of the Barbara Williams Service Award, a national honor given given out by the USTA.
The award “recognizes a female volunteer who, through her leadership and by her example, has encouraged and inspired others to become volunteers and assume leadership roles at the community, section and/or national levels of the USTA,” the association said in a press release.
Costamagna also coaches tennis at The Branson School and her boys team is set to compete for the MCAL championship against Redwood at 4 p.m. Friday at Tam High.
“Christine’s decades of service to the sport of tennis has unquestionably impacted players at every level of the sport,” USTA’s Craig Morris said in the release. “Tennis across the United States is better off thanks to all the work Christine has done both in her community and in service to the organization at a sectional and national level.”
Prep softball
Leah Cronin led the way with four hits and three RBIs as San Marin took a big step toward the postseason with an 8-1 victory against Marin Catholic on Wednesday night.
Taylor Testa, Savannah Reynolds, Ava Free, and Samantha Whitlock all had two hits as the Mustangs (8-7, 6-3) piled up 14 hits. The victory allowed San Marin to open up a 2.5-game cushion over MC (4-6-1, 3-5) for the fourth and final playoff spot with two weeks left in the season.
San Marin starter Brittany Casper scattered seven hits and stuck out 11 batters. Grace Berringer and Bella Ferrety had two hits apiece for the Wildcats.
- Terra Linda (4-6, 3-5) secured its third league win of the season, completing a sweep of Novato with an 11-6 victory on Wednesday.
Boys golf
Charlie Wilhelm and Dylan Siegel shot even-par 36s at Peacock Gap Thursday to lead undefeated Marin Academy to its 10th consecutive win, 169-181 against Stuart Hall.
Girls lacrosse
Carson Cann and Rowie Scobie had big games to lead Tam to a 15-5 non-league win against University Wednesday. Cann had three goals and a team-high six assists while Scobie had a team-high five goals, plus three ground balls and four draw controls.
Goalie Jamie Lemberg had eight saves. Graciela Hale had three assists and a goal and Brooklyn Hatch scored twice and added an assist.
