Sports briefs: Terra Linda swimmer Arinduque claims section title
Terra Linda High’s Nicholas Arinduque beat everyone else to the wall, winning the 100-yard breaststroke at the North Coast Section Championship Meet at Concord Community Pool on Saturday.
Arinduque entered the event with the second best seeding time then turned in a time of 56.25 seconds to win the section title. Arinduque finished 0.26 seconds ahead of Monte Vista’s Sammy Kan.
Arinduque’s title capped a strong day for the Terra Linda boys, who got two top-three finishes from Ben Butler and two fifth-place relay finishes to come in eighth in the team standings with 114 points.
Butler placed second in the 100 free (45.37) and finished third in the 200 free (1:38.53). Butler finished behind Northgate’s Mason Wendler (44.73) in the 100 and behind Foothill’s Luka Mijatovic (1:36.25) and Wendler (1:37.42) in the 200.
TL’s 200 medley relay team of Butler, Arinduque, Rhys Garroway, and Jack Middleton took fifth in 1:36.47. The 200 free relay team of Jackson Wright, Arinduque, Middleton and Butler were fifth with a time of 1:26.34.
Marin’s other A finalists were Branson’s Cameron Aryanpour in two events, Tam’s Addison Everage, plus the Marin Catholic girls 200 free relay team.
Aryanpour placed third in the 100 butterfly (50.35) and seventh in the 50 free (21.28). Everage placed sixth in the girls 100 back in 56.99 and also won the B Final in the 100 fly (57.98) to place ninth overall.
MC’s team of Alyssa Kooy, Amelia Kiriakis, Claire Cassidy, and Esme Quay took eighth (1:41.26).
Prep track
San Rafael resident and Marin Waves standout Ellie McCuskey-Hay won two events and placed second in two others for St. Ignatius High at the West Catholic Athletic League championships on Friday.
McCuskey-Hay, a sophomore, won both sprint events — the 100 in 11.89 seconds and the 200 in 25.02 — and finished second in the long jump (16-11). McCuskey-Hay was also on the second-place 4×100 relay team (49.65).
