Sports complex, years in the making, finally set for construction
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) – A sports complex that has faced numerous setbacks is back on track.
The Chatterton-Black EX Dome will be a 60,000-square-foot facility with four basketball courts and a turf facility along Cheshire Way in Huntington. The project is spearheaded by Expression Church.
The facility broke ground a year ago, with hopes of opening by the fall of 2023, but Pastor Kevin West with Expression Church said hurdles were presented.
“This is the first airfield sports dome material that’s been in West Virginia, so it’s kind of been a new territory for the whole state, from State Fire Marshal all the way to all the city and local planning commission,” West said.
West says one of the biggest troubles has been finding someone who can actually do the work.
“You have to have the expertise to be able to do this, because the company we purchased this dome from is out of St. Louis, Missouri, so it’s not just something anyone can do,” West said.
West says a building contractor is now secured and in place, and he expects work to officially begin in mid-September.
West hopes the project is completed and ready for use in early 2025.
