BASEBALL
Joe Lampe’s two-run double to left in the ninth inning Thursday capped a four-run rally off reliever Jacob Webb that lifted the Akron RubberDucks (32-22) to a 9-7 victory against the Portland Sea Dogs (29-25) at Hadlock Field.
The rally came after Portland used a four-run eighth inning to overcome a 5-2 deficit. Jake Donlan’s two-run double to center field gave the Sea Dogs the lead for the first time.
Eddinson Paulino had three hits for the Sea Dogs, who have lost two of the first three games in the six-game series. Roman Anthony added two hits in the 10-hit offense.
GOLF
THE MEMORIAL: Adam Hadwin shot a 6-under 66 to lead Masters champion Scottie Scheffler by one shot after the first round at Dublin, Ohio.
Xander Schauffele, the PGA champion, managed a bogey-free 68 and was tied with Corey Conners, Collin Morikawa and Ludvig Aberg. Defending champion Viktor Hovland was among those at 69.
AUTO RACING
EX-DRIVER CHARGED: Tighe Scott, a retired NASCAR driver, his adult son and two other Pennsylvania men are facing felony charges stemming from confrontations with police during the Jan. 6, 2021, siege on the U.S. Capitol.
Tipsters helped identify the men after authorities posted photos and videos of the riot online, including one who recognized Scott from his racing days.
INDYCAR: Arrow McLaren ended its partnership with Juncos Hollinger Racing after one of McLaren’s drivers said he had received death threats.
SOCCER
WORLD CUP: The Palestinian team advanced to the final round of qualification for the first time with a 0-0 draw against Lebanon.
The team, which played in Qatar because of security concerns in Gaza, is second in its group and five points clear of Lebanon with a single game left. The top two teams of each of the nine groups progress to the final qualifying round for the 2026 World Cup.
EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS: Jack Grealish and Harry Maguire were the biggest names to be cut from England’s squad as Manager Gareth Southgate named his final 26-man selection for the tournament.
MLS: San Diego FC, the league’s latest expansion team, signed winger Hirving “Chucky” Lozano, a Mexican World Cup veteran, as its first designated player.
HOCKEY
NHL: The team in Utah is down to six finalists for a name: Blizzard, Mammoth, Outlaws, Venom, Yeti and Utah Hockey Club, or Utah HC.
Owner Ryan Smith’s group, which owns the NBA’s Utah Jazz, bought the team formerly known as the Arizona Coyotes for $1.2 billion and relocated it to Salt Lake City. Carrying over the Coyotes name was not an option because former owner Alex Meruelo gets to retain that logo with the opportunity to bring the franchise back if he can get a suitable arena built in the Phoenix area.
FOOTBALL
NFL: Kansas City Chiefs backup defensive lineman B.J. Thompson was taken to a hospital in stable condition after experiencing a cardiac event during a team meeting.
Team trainers and medical staff were able to react quickly and treat Thompson until paramedics arrived.
• Indianapolis Colts quarterback Anthony Richardson played it safe on the final day of minicamp by resting his sore right shoulder.
COLLEGES
BASKETBALL: The Big 5 has expanded with the addition of Drexel this season in women’s basketball, the sixth Division I program to join the famed Philadelphia basketball tradition.
Drexel will make up the rest of the city series teams with Penn, La Salle, Temple, Saint Joseph’s and Villanova. The Dragons joined the Big 5 in men’s basketball last season. The women’s city champion will be crowned Dec. 6 in the Big 5 Classic tripleheader at Villanova.
