AUTO RACING
NASCAR: Hendrick Motorsports said it will not appeal Alex Bowman’s disqualification at Charlotte Motor Speedway that eliminated him from NASCAR title contention.
Bowman finished Sunday’s race at The Roval in 18th-place – high enough to eliminate Joey Logano of Team Penske from the playoff field by four points.
But NASCAR said the No. 48 Chevrolet failed a postrace inspection and disqualified Bowman for failing to meet minimum weight requirements. It dropped him to 38th, allowing Logano to claim the final spot in the third round of the playoffs.
• NASCAR has acknowledged it is aware of allegations that an engineer for a Cup Series team accessed proprietary information and shared it with another team.
The stock series released no details about the allegations because neither team has filed a complaint with NASCAR. But a series spokesman confirmed to The Associated Press at Charlotte Motor Speedway over the weekend it is aware of a brewing scandal between the two teams.
The engineer is in a contract year with Joe Gibbs Racing, according to executives with six teams who spoke with the AP on condition of anonymity because the details are considered private and have not been disclosed publicly. Joe Gibbs Racing, which has two cars still competing for the Cup title, declined to comment.
INDYCAR: Hailie Deegan said Monday she will move from NASCAR to IndyCar and compete in the Indy NXT Series next year with HMD Motorsports.
Deegan will drive the No. 38 entry for the full 14-race calendar of the series one step below IndyCar. She will be part of a five-driver team at HMD alongside Caio Collet, Josh Pierson, Tommy Smith, and Bryce Aron.
Deegan has never competed in open-wheel racing. The 23-year-old has spent the last four years in NASCAR, competing in the Truck Series – where she made her debut at age 18 – and the Xfinity Series.
SOCCER
NATIONS LEAGUE: France and Germany had stand-in forwards to thank for wins over fierce rivals.
With Kylian Mbappé again absent, Randal Kolo Muani started up front for France and scored in each half in a 2-1 victory at Belgium.
In his debut for Germany, Jamie Leweling had a second-minute strike ruled out after a video review but had more luck with a rasping drive in the 64th to lift his team to a 1-0 triumph over the Netherlands in Munich.
AFRICA CUP OF NATIONS: Nigeria’s soccer players returned to their country dancing and singing after boycotting a qualifier in Libya, where they were stranded overnight at Al Abraq Airport in what the team captain described as “mind games.”
Though authorities in Libya denied it was sabotage, the Confederation of African Football, which organizes the competition said it will investigate the “disturbing and unacceptable experiences” of Nigeria.
The Super Eagles were scheduled to play Tuesday. Nigeria won 1-0 when the teams played Friday, when similar accusations of sabotage from the Libya team came after they were delayed at a Nigerian airport.
