BASEBALL
Rhylan Thomas and Kevin Parada each singled home two runs during a five-run rally in the seventh inning, and the Binghamton Rumble Ponies overcame a 5-1 deficit to beat the Portland Sea Dogs for the fifth day in a row, winning 10-7 Saturday afternoon in an Eastern League at Hadlock Field.
Jeremiah Jackson added a two-run homer as Binghamton feasted on Portland’s bullpen. Sea Dogs starter Isaac Coffey struck out six and allowed just one hit, but he also walked five and exited after four innings.
Portland took a 5-1 lead in the third inning on an RBI single by Tyler Heineman and a three-run homer by Alex Binelas. Binelas, Roman Anthony, Nick Yorke and Phillip Sikes all had two hits for the Sea Dogs.
ROAD RACING
USATF 25K CHAMPIONSHIP: Former Cheverus High runner Emily Durgin finished fourth in the USATF 25-kilometer championship at the Amway River Bank Run in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
Durgin’s time of 1 hour, 23 minutes, 8.5 seconds was 36 seconds behind Betsy Saina, who broke the American record with a time of 1:22:32.
Last month, Durgin won the USATF 10-mile championship at the Cherry Blossom 10-Miler in Washington, D.C. In March, she placed third in Jacksonville, Florida, at the Gate River Run, which served as the USATF 15K championship. That race was won by fellow Maine native Rachel Smith. Durgin and Smith both live and train now in Flagstaff, Arizona.
GOLF
LPGA: Madelene Sagstrom and Rose Zhang left Nelly Korda and everyone else way behind in the Cognizant Founders Cup in Clifton, New Jersey.
Trying to win a record sixth straight LPGA Tour event, Korda shot a 1-over 73 in the third round. She was tied for third place, but 11 shots behind Sagstrom and 10 behind Zhang.
Sagstrom shot a 66 to get to 19-under 197. Zhang had a 67 after lipping out on a short birdie putt at No. 18.
PGA: Rory McIlroy s shot a bogey-free 4-under 67 on fast greens to pull within a stroke of Xander Schauffele with 18 holes remaining in the Wells Fargo Championship at Charlotte, North Carolina.
Schauffele scraped and clawed his way to a 70 to get to 12-under 201 as he looks to avenge last year’s runner-up finish.
• Chris Gotterup shot a 6-under 65 to push his lead to four strokes with a round left in the PGA Tour’s inaugural Myrtle Beach Classic in South Carolina.
Gotterup, a 24-year-old former University of Oklahoma player, is trying to break through for his first victory in his 27th PGA Tour start. He had an 18-under 195 total.
Erik van Rooyen (65), Jorge Campillo (67) and Robert MacIntyre (68) were tied for second.
TENNIS
ITALIAN OPEN: Fifteen days before he is scheduled to play in what will likely be his final French Open, Rafael Nadal is so unsatisfied with his level of tennis that he’s still debating whether or not to go to Roland Garros.
Nadal’s surgically repaired hip and his 37-year-old legs didn’t provide him with the necessary means to be competitive Saturday, as ninth-ranked Hubert Hurkacz overwhelmed the 22-time Grand Slam champion in a 6-1, 6-3 victory in the third round of the Italian Open in Rome.
In the women’s tournament, top-ranked Iga Swiatek beat Yulia Putintseva 6-3, 6-4, and Naomi Osaka defeated No. 11 Daria Kasatkina, 6-3, 6-3.
SOCCER
ENGLAND: Manchester City stayed in control of the Premier League title race by winning 4-0 at Fulham.
City extended its unbeaten run to 33 games and only has to win its final two matches – at Tottenham on Tuesday and at home against West Ham on May 19 – to capture an unprecedented fourth straight English top-flight title.
• Burnley was relegated from the Premier League when Micky van de Ven’s 82nd-minute goal earned Tottenham a 2-1 comeback victory in London.
The result kept Tottenham in the hunt for Champions League qualification by trimming its gap to fourth-place Aston Villa to four points. Both teams have two games left.
AUTO RACING
NASCAR: Tyler Reddick led qualifying for Sunday’s Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina, beating Roush Fenway Racing drivers in Brad Keselowski and Chris Buescher.
• Justin Allgaier used a dominating performance to get his third career Xfinity Series win at Darlington.
Allgaier led 119 of 147 laps, sweeping both stages as he finished ahead of Austin Hill and defending series champion Cole Custer.
INDYCAR: Alex Palou won a three-car battle among the leaders on his final pit stop, then beat Will Power into the first turn on the Indianapolis Grand Prix’s only restart before pulling away to win the race for the second straight year.
The Spaniard beat Australian Will Power to the finish line by 6.6106 seconds. Palou, the defending IndyCar champion, moved back into the top spot of the season standings. He led a race-high 39 of 85 laps and earned the 10th win of his career.
HOCKEY
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS: The United States rebounded from a 5-2 loss to Sweden by routing last year’s runner-up Germany, 6-1, in Ostrava, Czech Republic.
Johnny Gaudreau and Michael Kesselring each had a goal and an assist, and Brady Tkatchuk, Luke Hughes, Trevor Zegras and Michael Eyssimont also scored.
In Prague, Connor Bedard scored twice and Canada opened its title defense by beating Britain, 4-2.
