Sports fans across the country gather at ‘Hockeyday’ event in West Springfield
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Sports fans were in for a treat in West Springfield as some of this area’s greatest hockey players showed up for a day of fun and memories.
“We want to let everyone know where it started,” said Rich Amellin.
Pass the puck. It’s Hockeyday on the Eastern States Exposition fair grounds, even though the games call for cold temperatures, the warmth and excitement of fans is reach a fever pitch.
Rich Amellin with the Springfield Hockey Heritage Society, the organizers of the event explained what this event is all about.
“It’s a way to try and remember and keep alive the tradition of hockey in Springfield,” added Amellin. “We’re gonna have introduction, interviews, anybody can get an autograph, if they want from everybody and then you have a meal. It’s basically a giant meet and greet.”
It’s a place where the past and present of the great game come together. People and players from across the country and Canada are here to discuss all things Springfield hockey history.
We’re talking way back before they were the Thunderbirds, even before they were the Falcons, some of these ice idols played for the Indians.
“I played a year in Springfield and just great fans, tradition of hockey is fantastic, great building downtown and they make you feel at home in Springfield,” expressed Dan McCarthy.
On top of the kind words, there was debate.

Reporter: Favorite Springfield hockey player of all time?
“Well I was obviously the best player of them all, but I have to give kudos to Bruce Cline,” noted McCarthy.
“Eddie Short Sr. The chief of the tribe,” said James Brown.
“Bruce Cline,” argued Amellin.
There’s a journey through jerseys, as well, but most importantly there’s a chance to experience the pucks of the past, while cheering on the future the sport in Springfield.

“love them, love going to the games, go to every game I can,” added Brown.
