Olea earns three top-four finishes at state
Hancock College sophomore Itandehui Olea racked up three top-four finishes at the 3C2A Track and Field State Championship that took place Friday and Saturday at Saddleback College in Mission Viejo.
Olea finished second in 36 minutes, 37.95 seconds in the women’s 10,000. She finished fourth in the 1,500 (4:45.64) and 5,000 (17:40.52).
Hancock sophomore Nasim Moody finished fifth in the men’s long jump at 7.03 meters (23 feet, 0.75 inches). Hancock freshman Eva Luu finished eighth in 4:51.28 in the women’s 1,500.
Casey wins at Central Section Masters
Santa Ynez senior Vince Casey broke his own school record and won the boys long jump with a best of 23 feet, 5 inches at the CIF Central Section Masters Meet Saturday at Clovis Buchanan High School.
Casey qualified for the CIF State Track and Field Championships that will take place this Friday and Saturday at Buchanan.
At press time, Santa Ynez’s Madison Dewett and Malia Ortiz were waiting to see if they qualified for the state meet. Dewett finished seventh in the girls discus at the Masters Meet, and Ortiz finished ninth in the girls pole vault with a school record 10-9.
Santa Ynez’s Kate Wade finished 17th in the pole vault at the Masters Meet. Wade did not qualify for the state meet.

Balderas to fight in Las Vegas July 28
Santa Maria native Karlos Balderas will box on the undercard in an event featuring Seniesa Estrada defending her WBC and WBA minimumweight world titles July 28 at Pearl Concert Theater at Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.
Balderas (14-1, 12 knockouts) was a U.S. Olympian in 2016. He will go against Nahir Albright (15-2, 7 KOs) of Philadelphia in an eight-round lightweight fight.
Estrada (24-0, 9 KOs), a 12-year pro, will go against former world champion Leoneia Yudica (19-1-3, 1 KO). In a 10-round junior lightweight co-feature, Las Vegas native Andres Cortes (I9-0, 10 KOs) will go against Sacramento native Xavier Martinez (18-1, 12 KOs).
As part of the undercard, Puerto Rico native Abraham Nova (22-1, 15 KOs) will face Columbian former world champion Jonathan Romero (35-1, 19 KOs) in a 10-round junior lightweight fight.
Other undercard fights will include the Balderas bout, Dominican Rohan Polanco (9-0, 5 KOs) against Panamanian Cesar Francis (12-1, 7 KOs) in an eight-round junior welterweight fight, and former Team USA amateur standout Charlie Sheehy (6-0, 4 KOs) against Subaru Murata (4-0, 4 KOs) of Japan in a six-round lightweight bout.
The entire card, including the undercard, will be telecast live on ESPN+.
