Sports Person of the Week – Callen Fuller

LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) – “On my 10 U team they started calling me honey bun and it just stuck ever since,” 13-year-old baseball player, Callen Fuller said.

Callen Fuller also known by his teammates and coaches as Honey Bun has proven to be resilient after overcoming a near tragedy at baseball practice several months ago.

“The coach hit the ball it was like a line drive straight to me i started running to get it I lost it in the light and it just hit me straight in the face,” Fuller said.

“We were scared right when we happened we knew something was wrong,” Callen’s mom, Cammie Fuller said.

Callen suffered four orbital fractures meaning he broke four bones in his face and because of it, he was sent to Lady of the Lake Medical Center in Baton Rouge where he had surgery to get his face reconstructed.

“They’re not kids anymore they’re young men but a very pivotal point are they going stick with it or is it going to make them quit but from what I understand first thing he asked when he woke up he asked how long before I can play again,” Fuller’s assistant coach at Champion Baseball, Blake Walker said.

While Callen was being treated at the hospital in Baton Rouge in March the Savannah Bananas baseball team happened to stop by to visit the hospital and Callen made sure to get their attention.

“It just so happened the Savannah Bananas were playing in Baton Rouge that weekend so they came by the hospital to visit some patients and he caught a glimpse of them in the hallway and all of a sudden he needed a coke and just happened to run into the Savannah Bananas,” Callen’s Dad, Matt Fuller said.

Callen plays for Champion Baseball…his team knows how special he is on the field but they also know the quality of his character.

“He’s a selfless player, and that’s awesome but something a lot of coaches don’t talk about is the person, Callen is a really good kid and really respectful,” said Champion Baseball CEO, Blake Perrodin said.

Through this journey, Callen has had his biggest supporters rooting him on and they’ll be on his mind when he returns to the field next week.

“I know that I have something to come back to at baseball and it’s just really a blessing to have all these people praying for me,” Fuller said.

Fuller is expected to return to the field next week but he will have to wear a protective for six months while playing.
