Sports reinstated at Jackson Middle School after behavior-related suspension

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WNDU) – Sports have been reinstated at Jackson Middle School after they were suspended three weeks ago due to student behavior.

WNDU 16 News Now learned back on Aug. 30 that all athletic competitions were halted because of multiple students disregarding school rules. The suspension was part of Principal Jory Hardman’s effort to restore order while establishing school rules.

According to our reporting partners at the South Bend Tribune, several reports were filed with the South Bend Police Department in August regarding fights at the school and threats made by students.

The district tells The Tribune that the school conducted enrichment activities for student-athletes during the suspension. This included weightlifting, meetings, and study sessions with their teams.

Athletic competitions officially returned on Monday, as Jackson hosted its first volleyball match of the season.

Hardmen tells The Tribune the suspension has so far led to a positive overall change at the school.
