Sports Roundup: Boys Soccer Ties Barnstable

This Whaler sports roundup includes updates on the boys soccer team after their tie against Barnstable, one of the top programs on the Cape & Islands, the golf team after they shot a 234 at Miacomet Golf, the girls soccer team after a blowout road victory, the cross country team following their second win in as many meets to begin their season, and the volleyball team.
Diaz Brothers Help Boys Soccer Earn Tie
The boys soccer team hosted the Barnstable Red Hawks on Tuesday and tied them 2-2. Jose Diaz and Anderson Diaz were responsible for the two goals scored by Nantucket, who trailed 2-0 at halftime before their impressive comeback.
Barnstable came out strong and scored their goals with 23 minutes and 10 minutes remaining in the first half. Nantucket’s junior keeper Alex Ivilov was sharp in net and made several key saves to keep his team within striking distance as they transitioned to the second half.
The Whalers are now 1-0-3 to begin their season and will try to build on this encouraging performance when they host the St. John Paul II Lions at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 19.
Golf Beats Sturgis East, Shoots 234
The Whaler golf team had another strong day at Miacomet Golf Course Tuesday afternoon – beating the Sturgis East Storm 234-281. They were led by David Boulter, who shot a 36, David Foley who shot a 38, and TQ Scarlett who shot a 39.

The performance was a strong bounce back for Nantucket after they lost to the top team on the Cape, the Nauset Warriors, 235-266 on Monday at Miacomet. Nantucket is now 4-2 this season. They will try to earn their fifth win on Wednesday, September 18 when they go on the road to face the Monomoy Sharks at 3:30 p.m. They will be golfing at Cranberry Valley.
Girls Soccer Shuts Out Barnstable
The girls soccer team was on the road Tuesday afternoon squaring off against the Barnstable Red Hawks. Despite a slow start, head coach Doug LeBrecht said his team settled in nicely and ended up beating the Red Hawks 5-0.
Senior captain Adney Brannigan, per usual, led the way offensively with three goals. Freshman Harper LeBrecht and junior Myah Johnson each had one goal in the match.
The Whalers are now 3-0-2 this season and they will look to remain unbeaten when they travel to the Cape to face St. John Paul II on Thursday, September 19 at 4 p.m. The Whalers tied SJP 3-3 on September 14 on the island in their first matchup.
Cross Country Beats Monomoy
The cross country team was at the island’s Gardner Farm property Tuesday afternoon to take part in their second meet of the season with the Monomoy Sharks washing ashore. The Whalers earned a narrow 27-28 victory over the Sharks, and they were led by Rory Murray (19:04) and Dorian Manov (19:59).

The Whalers are now 2-0 this season and will travel to Rising Tide to face the Herons on Tuesday, September 24 at 4 p.m.
Volleyball Loses 3-1 To Falmouth
The Whaler volleyball team lost to the Falmouth Clippers Monday afternoon 3-1, which dropped their record to 1-4 this season. The sets were as followed.
Set One: 21-25 Falmouth
Set Two: 25-22 Nantucket
Set Three: 16-25 Falmouth
Set Four: 16-25 Falmouth
“It’s coming together and there’s a lot of really nice sequences,” Whaler head coach Makaila Lyons said. “We know we’re capable of beating them because we beat them in a set, it’s just being able to kind of push past a mental block when we’re down. When we get down a certain amount, they just get in their heads. I know that’s really hard to push past, but it’s not physical. Physically we’re there and we got the energy and everything we need. Attitudes were mostly good today. It’s just pushing past that block when we’re down by seven, eight, etc. It feels like a million, but it’s not.”
Nantucket will look to get back in the win column on Wednesday, September 18 when they host the Barnstable Red Hawks at 4 p.m.
