Sports Spotlight: Gavin Lill
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – The people of Bismarck know who Gavin Lill is. They’ve seen him just about everywhere— the baseball diamond, the basketball court, and of course, the football field.
“I think that’s actually the best part, just the order. I think especially nowadays, doing multiple sports is so good, giving your body different breaks in different sports. Football, getting beat up, and then going to basketball, it’s just totally different, it’s less physical,” said Gavin Lill, Bismarck Governors outfielder and pitcher.
“To me, it starts with Gavin with his two things, his competitiveness. Whatever he does, he competes. I think that’s why he’s been able to be good at a number of different sports. The other thing is hard work,” said Bismarck Governors Head Coach Mike Skytland.
While Lill is currently playing for the Governors, he will be attending MSU-Moorhead in the fall to play football for the Dragons.
“Ooftah, it wasn’t easy right away, but the coaches there, they are so amazing. They’re super nice. They really show that they care for the players. So that’s kind of what aided my decision,” said Lill.
The jump from high school football to college football is a big one. Lill had a lot of work to do to get himself ready for the next level.
“When they recruited me, I was about 175, 180, and now I’m about 205. We’ll see how that goes, but yeah, they want me at receiver. Hopefully, use that speed on the outside and get past some corners,” said Lill.
Lill’s methods for this are tried and true.
“Eating a lot of food. I try to keep it clean, but you know it’s not super easy. Just lifting weights, eating a lot of food, just trying to get my body right for college,” said Lill.
“You can always catch him at the gym working out, even when he’s not at baseball. Even on away trips. He’ll be like ‘Hey guys, let’s walk to the gym’ and we’ll all be like ‘Yeah’ and it pushes the rest of us to work hard,” said Ben LaDuke, Bismarck Governors infielder.
Lill will be on the baseball diamond Wednesday evening as the Governors take on the Mandan Chiefs for their annual Fourth of July series.
