Sports Spotlight: Halle Severson
BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Volleyball, Basketball and tennis: a trifecta of sports for Legacy senior Halle Severson, just don’t ask her to pick her favorite.
“Everyone asks me if I have a favorite sport, I really don’t, I kind of like all the different challenges in sports dynamic and everything. In all the volleyball, basketball and tennis— they’re all very competitive and I like the aspects they all bring,” said Severson.
“I’m a big advocate for multi-sport athletes, and the more I can get in my sport, the easier it is for them to learn the sport. And I know I’m going to get kids who like to compete,” said Scott McPherson, Legacy tennis coach.
On the tennis court, Severson plays number two singles for the Sabers, her classmate and friend Aleah McPherson is at one singles. The two share a trait that is very good for student-athletes to have.
“Her competitiveness is just like mine, we do all the same sports. It’s so fun to be on the volleyball, basketball court, and the tennis court with her. We just have the same mindset, we kind of play the same too, so it’s a lot of fun. Each of us, we kind of bring different aspects to the team,” said Aleah.
As players competing amongst themselves for the top spot on the team, you’d think that could maybe cause some problems. And it does, for the other teams that is.
“It’s really competitive between us, and like I say, we kind of play the same. I feel like when we see different teams, I don’t know, we kind of play the same, so it’s scary when they see both of us,” said Aleah.
The mentality that Severson brings is also an excellent asset.
“She’s very bright, she’s intelligent, coachable and athletic, and those are great combinations for any coach,” said Scott.
“Knowing what you can control on your side of the net— whether it’s just getting the ball back in play or just trying to keep the point going as long as you can— is kind of what my mentality is every time. You never know what you’re going to face, and you’d got to work with what you’ve got,” said Severson.
“She’s always hyping me up no matter what happens. That’s a lot of fun, she brings a lot of confidence to me personally, and I think that’s what she does very well,” said Aleah.
It’s hard to think of a better way to end your high school athletic career than by playing beside your best friend.
Also, Severson was picked to play in the 2024 Optimist All-Star Volleyball Series this summer.
