Sports Spotlight: Kyle Kuether

BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – Bismarck State College volleyball is no stranger to the big stage, but head coach Kyle Kuether has undoubtedly raised the level of the Mystics program.

He has the Mystics on their way to the district championship for the second time in three seasons.

It’s a Tuesday afternoon in November. The Bismarck State Women’s Volleyball team is feeling good after winning another region title.

“Region championships are awesome,” said BSC head coach Kyle Kuether.

It’s difficult to put it any more succinctly than that.

The Mystics have done it again. For the second time in three years, the Bismarck State Women’s Volleyball team is the region champion under Kuether.

“I think every year is a little bit different,” said Kuether. “The obstacles from year to year are a little bit different.”

After graduating from BSC and then NDSU, Kuether returned to Bismarck and got into coaching. He had a good reason for coming back to the Capital City.

“I always joke that it’s my wife’s fault. We came back because she had a job, otherwise, I’m not sure where we would be. When I moved back to Bismarck, I got started coaching middle school and kind of just kept moving up,” said Kuether.

After an extended stint coaching high school, Kuether needed to make a difficult decision.

“I definitely prayed about it a lot, I coached at St. Mary’s for nine years and just really loved St. Mary’s. The culture at St. Mary’s was awesome, and it was really hard to leave,” said Kuether.

In 2020, BSC offered Kuether the head coaching job. While the pandemic raged on, he was tested right off the bat.

“I always joke that the biggest challenge was right when I started, so everything else was easy,” said Kuether.

His coaching style has definitely resonated with his players.

“He has knowledge, but he also does a really good job of making connections with his athletes,” said BSC middle blocker Chelsa Krom. “Inside jokes, he really likes his dad jokes. He likes to lighten the mood with those.”

“He’s just really fun to play for, he believes in us,” said BSC setter Kate Zimmer. “He just lets us play volleyball. It’s never super technical, it’s just more fun.”

Up next for BSC is the District Championship this weekend in Nebraska.
