Spotify Seeks to Prevent Kids from Ruining Their Parents’ Algorithm with New Feature

Spotify is the latest streaming platform to offer a solution to parents who are tired of their kids ruining their carefully curated algorithm. 

The streaming service launched a pilot program in Denmark, New Zealand, and Sweden that allows users under 13 to create their own profile under a family plan. Parents and guardians can then tailor the kids’ account to, for example, skip explicit songs and videos. 

The platform has taken steps to address the issue of content co-mingling in the past. In 2020, Spotify released a kids app, and last year it added a feature allowing users to exclude selected playlists from their user profile.

The new pilot program aims to further curb unwanted changes to a listener’s algorithm — and the all-important end-of-year Spotify Wrapped roundup.  

There’s no word yet on when the update will be available to parents in the U.S., where family plans cost $19.99 per month.
