State Ballet Theatre of Ukraine to perform ‘Swan Lake’ in Melbourne
When “Swan Lake” premiered at Moscow’s Bolshoi Theater in 1877, composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky didn’t have the best of days. Critics labeled Tchaikovsky’s new ballet as “too noisy and too Wagnerian” and the story as “stupid.”
So much for the critics.
“Swan Lake” became one of the world’s most beloved ballets, and its popularity has not dimmed with time. The King Center brings the classic to Brevard with a full-scale production presented by Classical Arts Entertainment and performed by the State Ballet of Ukraine, with Tchaikovsky’s legendary score performed by the Space Coast Symphony Orchestra.
With one show at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, this production of “Swan Lake” is a holiday treat for the senses featuring some of the world’s finest dancers, incredible music and a grand and glittering set.
“This production remains one of the most in-demand classical ballets for many reasons,” said Ekaterina Yachmennikov, a producer with Classical Arts Entertainment.
“The legendary score by Tchaikovsky is truly timeless, resonating deeply with audiences across generations. Paired with iconic variations and elegant, harmonious choreography, Swan Lake is the epitome of classical ballet art.”
While the Space Coast Symphony is no stranger to performing full-length ballets with several amazing ballet companies, this production is special.
“Swan Lake” is one of the most technically and emotionally challenging classical ballets. It is also one of the most popular, adored by children and adults alike. First is the compelling story of tragic love,” said symphony conductor Aaron Collins.
“‘Swan Lake’ is a prime example of their enduring power to captivate and move audiences. You’ll never forget your first time hearing Tchaikovsky’s sumptuous ‘Swan Theme’ as the ethereal swans flood the stage. It’s just one of the best ballets written.”
“We had the great fortune to partner with this incredible organization several years ago and it was an immensely satisfying partnership. The team at Classical Arts Entertainment is top-notch and their productions are second to none.”
King Center audiences can opt for regular tickets, which run $34 to $74, or go for the VIP Experience, which include premium seating, professional photograph with a ballerina and scenery backdrop, and a flex ticket good for all Space Coast Symphony subscription concerts. VIP tickets are $153.75. Purchase tickets through kingcenter.com or by calling 321-242-2219.
It’s hard to go wrong with any seats for this particular production.
“Our dancers are exceptionally skilled and trained to bring this masterpiece to life, expressing the beauty of Tchaikovsky’s music through their movements and storytelling,” Yachmennikov said.
“The ballet’s narrative also plays a crucial role in its enduring appeal. It invites audiences to escape their routines and challenges for a couple of hours, to dream, and to believe in the transformative power of love and hope, reminding us all that a happy ending is possible.”
