State-regulated cannabis businesses opening in Jefferson County

TOWN OF PAMELIA, New York (WWNY) – Two state-regulated cannabis businesses have the green light to open in Jefferson County.

The sign is hard to miss when driving north on State Route 12 in the town of Pamelia – ‘Cannabis Depot Opening Soon.’

It’s a state-regulated cannabis dispensary in the old Blue Seal feed store at Murrock Circle. It’s set to open next week to sell cannabis, vapes and gummies.

Meanwhile in Evans Mills, the new owner of an old railway building has plans to turn it into an adult-use microbusiness. According to the state’s Office of Cannabis Management website, a microbusiness is focused more on the growing of cannabis

The owner of a microbusiness is also required to do one other licensed cannabis activity whether that be processing, distribution or retail sales.

This business will be in the county’s District 8 Legislative District, which James Nabywaniec represents. He says he’s interested to see how this will work.

“You know, someone rehabbing a building and putting it to use, and I’m not sure how many jobs it will produce but I’m all for small business,” he said.

It’s unclear when the business may be up and running

Local governments will benefit from these businesses once operational since 4 percent of all sales go back to local and county governments.
