Stateline thrift shops offer options for back-to-school shoppers

(WIFR) – With summer winding down, families get ready for the back-to-school season and the costs that comes with it.

Forbes says that nearly 40% of parents plan to spend more than $400 on back-to-school shopping.

However, there are ways families can save a little money. Thrift stores are one of them.

“Everything is so expensive right now, I mean you have your school supplies, your school clothes, you have school registration. If you have your kids in sports, I mean there is normally a fee for that,” says Shannon Harper, Senior PR Marketing Manager at Goodwill Industries of Northern Illinois. “It can just become unmanageable, so by shopping at Goodwill for a lot of your school needs, your clothes, your supplies, it can save a lot of money.”

It is not just back to school families prepare for, but older students who may need homecoming or formal outfits.

“We have all different age groups that come in. Teenagers, we are right down the street from Hononegah High School, so we have a lot of high school kids. We have lots of different name brands that we have at a discounted price here,” said Tonya Morgan owner of Truly Treasured Gift N Thrift in Rockton.

Both organizations say they want children of all ages to like what they are wearing this school year.

“Sometimes if you don’t have the right name brands, you may be looked down upon. We don’t want that to happen, we have all name brands here. It is not just about the name brands but if it is something someone likes to wear,” Morgan said.

Goodwill says it is currently running its Cool 4 School campaign, highlighting affordable prices and sustainability. Truly Treasured says it offers discounts and coupons for items that have been gently used.
