Staunton-Augusta YMCA offers fitness classes geared toward seniors

STAUNTON, Va. (WHSV) – The Staunton-Augusta YMCA offers multiple group fitness classes specifically for senior citizens.

Eleanor Rixey, marketing and communications coordinator for the Staunton-Augusta YMCA, said being out in the hot weather can dehydrate you quickly without realizing it. She said promoting healthy movement is important, especially as you age.

If you do not keep up with your mobility, you could lose it, like your balance, Rixey said. It is also important to have that space to work on your mobility that is safe, she added.

“The instructor is going to do exercises that [are] geared toward mobility, flexibility and functional strength,” Rixey said.

As people age, their bodies also become more susceptible to heat-related illnesses. It can be easy to not notice dehydration and even just standing in the heat can be dangerous.

“When we exercise, we are getting our heart rate up,” Rixey said. “We are producing more body heat, and doing that in an environment that is already hot can become problematic really quickly.”
