Steam’s new free game has already rocketed to top of the charts

The game is currently Rivaling the all-time peaks of Among Us and Helldivers 2

A brand new, free to play title just hit Steam earlier this morning… and it’s already number one on the Trending Games chart and number four on the Most Played Games chart.

NetEase Games’ “Super Hero Team-Based PVP Shooter” Marvel Rivals is finally here, after what feels like years of waiting.

And, well, seems all that hype wasn’t misplaced, given it’s current player count rankings over on SteamDB.

As of writing, there are almost 300,000 people in game. It peaked at somewhere around 444,000 concurrent players a mere hour after it was available, but given that it dropped in the early hours of last night… I think we’re going to see it break that record in roughly eight or so hours (once all the Americans finish work and hop online).

It’s also currently the 25th most-played game in Steam’s history, beating out titles such as Sons Of The Forest, World of Warships and even Grand Theft Auto V.

Marvel Rivals is also only a couple thousand concurrent players short of knocking Among Us off the 24th spot too, which honestly might be the most unbelievable part of its success to me.

So, big player numbers are great and all, but what’s the critical reception like?

It’s… pretty good? Sort of. Marvel Rivals is currently rated “Mostly Positive” on Steam with over 8,300 reviews, 74% of which are positive.

Now, a 7.5/10 outta 10 sounds decent, but let’s clear a few things up regarding this score.

The game has been out for like 12 hours. Steam thankfully reveals a user’s playtime in their reviews, and 90% of these reviews are from people with less than a couple of hours of playtime.

In short, don’t trust that score. I don’t care if someone gave it a good score, a terrible score, or something in between; basically every single one of these reviews is worthless at this current point in time.

Check back in a few days when people have truly gotten to grips with it, and we’ll see how much that score percentage has changed.
