Sticking to that new year resolution at the gym
WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WGGB/WSHM) – Year after year, resolutions to go to the gym are set… and then broken soon later.
So, how do you make those fitness resolutions stick?
Western Mass News is getting answers!
We went to the Powerhouse Gym on Memorial Ave. in West Springfield to find out just how many people sign up at the beginning of the year with intentions to achieve a healthier lifestyle.
A new year…
“I really want to just travel more,” Piper Smythe told us.
…A new you.
“In my experience here, the New Year’s resolutioners, we do see a big influx of them,” explained Alexandrea Hayward, regional manager at Powerhouse Gym.
According to the Associated Press… “About 3 in 10 adults choose resolutions involving exercise or eating healthier and about one-quarter said they’ll make a resolution involving losing weight.”
But how often do we set a goal for the new year and fail to follow through?
We asked Hayward if she sees a lot of those people that sign up in the beginning of the year tend to drift off, like starting a New Year’s resolution, that don’t go through with it.
Her response..
“Yes, unfortunately. I wouldn’t say all of them, there are some people that will stick to it.”
She told us she sees a major increase in gym sign-ups during this week every year.
“Comparatively to the rest of the year its like a 50% increase between January and February. And after that it kind of falls back down especially towards summer,” Hayward noted.
Despite their good intentions, she says many people stop showing up before the end of the month.
As for the first of the month…
“It’s definitely the busiest day, I don’t know what it is. It’s always that first Monday after the new year,” Hayward explained.
If you struggle to keep those fitness resolutions consistent year round… follow Hayward’s philosophy:
“Stick to it if that’s what you want to do. Don’t be afraid to ask for help. We are all here for moral support, so don’t feel like anyone is judging.”
She tells Western Mass News that sticking to your fitness goals can be easier with a personal trainer who can encourage you to show up, work hard, and follow through.
