Student starts crochet business, urges others to follow their passions – TrojanVision
TROY, Ala. (TROJANVISION) — A Troy University student is growing her business one crocheted item at a time.
What started off as craft days after church has become student Kayla Oatis’ business. She says it all thanks to her group leader, Mrs. Kim.
“She came that next week with her bin full of yarn and hooks and different things, and she taught us the basics,” Oatis said. “After that, I took it home, and I just went and worked it around, and I went from there.”
Thanks to the encouragement and willingness of friends, Oatis was able to turn her passion for crocheting into a profit.
“My friends sort of pushed me into it a little bit; shout out to them; they know who they are,” Oatis explained. “They were like ‘Kayla, you have a gift, a passion, and you always seem to be doing it when we call or text. Why don’t you turn it into something more profitable so that you can earn more income and things like that?’”
Oatis not only runs her own business, she also balances two jobs on top of being a full-time college student.
Oatis says she loves to see happy customers and to know an item she made is being put to good use.

“It feels me with a sense of joy to see people wearing my stuff around campus and posting on their Instagram,” Oatis said. “I think it’s so cool that people who buy my items actually like them. I get recommendations from other people; I just find it super fun. It means a lot to me.”
