Subagyo Shines at National Sports Week in Indonesia – Oakland University Athletics

ROCHESTER, Mich. – Oakland University swimmer Nicholas Karel Subagyo posted impressive results at the National Sports Week held in Indonesia this past week, where he represented the province of Jakarta. In his first appearance competing against some of the nation’s best athletes, Karel not only represented Oakland University on the international stage, but also brought home valuable experience and insights from this prestigious event.

National Sports Week 2024 (PON XXI/PON ACEH-SUMUT 2024) is the 21st edition of this major multi-sport event, taking place from September 8-20, 2024, in Aceh and North Sumatra. This marks the first time PON is co-hosted by two provinces, the second time in North Sumatra (previously in 1953), and the first in Aceh. It’s also the fourth PON in Sumatra, with previous events held in Medan (1953), Palembang (2004), and Pekanbaru (2012).

Karel delivered an outstanding performance, achieving personal best times in all five of his events.

His highlights include:

  • Gold Medal in the 400 M Freestyle, where he not only became the National Champion but also set a new PON Record with an impressive time of 3:56.40.
  • Gold Medal in the 4×200 M Freestyle Relay.
  • Silver Medal in the 1500 M Freestyle with a time of 15:46.80.

Head Coach Mitch Alters expressed his pride in Karel’s achievements: “We are extremely proud of Karel for his success at the National Sports Week in Indonesia. Karel worked hard throughout the summer, and it was exciting to see all his efforts pay off in front of his family and friends. His success at this meet should lead to many more opportunities at an international level. His future is looking very bright! OU PRIDE!”

Karel’s success at this national event not only showcases his individual achievements but also reflects the strength of the swimming program at Oakland University. The coaching staff is proud of Karel’s accomplishments and is excited to see how this experience will enhance his performance this season.
