Summer is flying by, but we’ve got some ideas on how to enjoy it before it’s gone

Welcome to the weekly Port City Life newsletter brought to you by me, StarNews reporter John Staton.

Summer is really flying by, and we’ve already reached the final weekend of June, if you can believe that. Before you know it, we’ll be seeing ads for back-to-school sales.

In other words, summer might seem like it’s endless when you’re in the middle of it, but if you’re not careful it’ll pass you by. (Don’t be like me that one year, when I realized in August that I hadn’t been to the beach yet.)

Anyway, the goal of this newsletter is to point you toward entertainment opportunities, dining options and more so that you can live your best life all summer long. Let’s see what the weekend has in store.

Weekend weather outlook

It’s shaping up to be a rainy weekend, with a chance of thunderstorms Friday, Saturday AND Sunday. It’s only a 40% chance each day, though, so maybe we’ll get lucky. Highs in the upper 80s.

Go | See | Do

Summer in Wilmington is in full swing, and we’ve got the events to prove it.

From a concert with country star Cole Swindell at Live Oak Bank Pavilion downtown and a stand-up show by sitting “Saturday Night Live” cast member Michael Longfellow at Dead Crow Comedy Room, there’s quite a bit to take in.

Other highlights include a production of the beloved musical “Annie” at Thalian Hall, and several new art exhibits opening downtown for Fourth Friday Gallery Night. Link to full list is below.

The Dish with Port City Foodies

A downtown Wilmington restaurant has the best burrito in North Carolina. That’s according to not just one but two lists the restaurant topped recently. Allison Ballard has the story.

Plus, two of downtown Wilmington’s oldest restaurants are getting a fresh rebrand, and we’ve got a list of summer cocktails to try at area establishments.

Getting to know The Barzarre

Entertainment venue the Barzarre at 1610 Castle St. — a gritty, longtime haven for eclectic music, edgy comedy, sideshow-style performances and an offbeat, unclassifiable clientele that has taken to calling itself The Barzarrean Horde — celebrates 20 years in business this year. We talk with owner Bash Gomez about what gives the eclectic spot its staying power.

How bizarre: This Wilmington venue was in the Cargo District before it was cool

News you can use

Southern Brunswick County is getting a new Walmart, and a big grocery chain is bringing a new location there as well. Reporter Jamey Cross has the story.

Plus, the New Hanover County Board of Education calls an emergency meeting to deal with its ongoing funding crisis, and a Brunswick County beach town makes a list of most affordable beach communities in the country.
