Summer Sports: Ridley Township clinches Delco diving crown

Ridley Township clinched the Delco Diving League championship for the seventh consecutive year Tuesday with a 40-8 win over Nassau.

Ridley’s first-place performances came from Emma Kauffman (novice girls), Hannah Suplee (junior girls), Conner Spera (junior boys), Ava Keller (senior girls) and Tyler Reeve (senior boys).

In other results:

Prospect Park 39, Tinicum 14 >> Prospect Park secured victories from Olivia Steenberger (novice girls), Sam Nagle (novice boys), Alex Giordano (junior boys), Mare Nagle (senior girls) and Logan Giordano (senior boys). Payton Rush claimed first place in the junior girls division for Tinicum.

Riddlewood 14, Knowlton 13 >> Riddlewood edged out Knowlton in a closely contested meet with first-place finishes from Alexander Dussling (novice boys) and Rhys Thomas (junior boys).

Knowlton saw victories from Valente Santoso (novice girls) and Cora Scholtz (senior girls).

Ridley Park 46, Nassau 5 >> Leading the way for Ridley Park were winners Ava Ciavarelli (novice girls), Anthony Criscaulo (novice boys), Riley Faust (junior girls), Braydan Saunders (junior boys), Emily Orr (senior girls) and Jake Dyer (senior boys).

Karakung 30, Prospect Park 24 >> Karakung’s victory was bolstered by first-place finishes from Maddie Clune (junior girls), Liam Hawthorn (junior boys) and Aaron Mead (senior boys).

Baseball

Mike Valente dazzled on the mound as Wayne drew even with Upper Darby atop the Delco League standings with Thursday’s 2-0 victory.

Valente was dominant, striking out 12 over six innings of one-hit ball without issuing a walk. Tommy Bradley recorded the save.

Matt Briner’s squeeze bunt in the bottom of the fourth scored Jaime Neris to give Wayne (19-5-2) a 1-0 lead. Wayne added a run in the sixth on Ryan Downey’s bases-loaded walk.

Tim Ford recorded Upper Darby’s lone hit. The Blue Sox (19-7-2) had been unbeaten in 12 games.

In other Delco League action:

Drexel Hill 6, Chester 1 >> The Ducks capitalized on five Chester errors despite managing only three hits.

Irv Fisher stole five bases and added a hit, an RBI, two runs scored and two walks. Jaxon Kehoe pitched 3.1 innings, striking out four and allowing just one hit.

In the Mid-County Senior League:

Garnet Valley 10, Marple 5 >> The Valleymen rallied from a five-run deficit to clinch the decisive Game 3 of the semifinals. Ray Gordon’s RBI single evened the score in the fifth inning. Shane Van Horn’s two-run triple highlighted a five-run bottom of the sixth.

Steven James, Gordon and Van Horn all finished with two hits for the Valleymen. Jake Troutner went the distance on the mound.

Softball

Bruce Gilbert belted a three-run home run in the top of the ninth, breaking open a tight game and lifting AmPro Screen Printing to a 17-11 win over top-seeded Goshen Beverage in the opener of the Brandywine Valley Senior Softball Association’s Gold Division championship series Wednesday.

John DiPasquale contributed four hits, and Rick Mengel was the winning pitcher.
