Support local shops during National Small Business Week

APPLETON, Wis. (WBAY) – The clock is ticking to celebrate the hard work that goes into running a small business.

National Small Business Week is about community pride. There’s nothing like stepping downtown and feeling good about the shops and workers making sure you leave with that perfect outfit or artwork for your home, as just a couple of examples. There is so much more small businesses all across our area have to offer.

But here’s the key: Owners rely on you to keep the doors open as more people take up online shopping.

According to Forbes, more than 30% of shoppers buy something online at least once a week instead of visiting a boutique in person.

An American Express study says 68 cents of every dollar you spend at a small business stays in the area. It helps to keep the lights on but it also trickles down to those local workers who spend money on themselves at more local businesses.

American Express says if every Gen Z and Millennial shopper spent $10 at a small business in one day, it would support $2 billion in local economic booms across the country.

The owner of Lillians of Appleton said most small business owners are always trying to put their best foot forward, always trying to give their customers a smile and personal feel.

She says there’s enthusiasm you might not find at a big chain.

“There’s a lot of passion and when it’s yours. You put so much into it because you want to be successful. You want to be good. It takes a lot of energy and sleepless nights and early mornings and late nights,” Kara Manuel said.

In downtown Appleton, boutique workers tell us it’s been a tough start to the year. Manuel says shoppers are coming in less often right now and she’s noticing a slower College Avenue scene.

“People shop with how they feel, so if they’re not happy with what the weather is they’re not coming downtown. There’s been a lot of changes. There’s a lot of construction going on. A lot of movement downtown Appleton,” the shop owner said.

National Small Business Week ends Saturday — and the forecast calls for a beautiful weekend to get out and walk the downtown shops — but small business owners want you to keep your local shops in mind all year long.
