Surfside Beach contemplates open container zoning in entertainment district

Though Surfside Beach does not currently allow open containers, the Pier Committee’s Chairman Dusty McCraken said that it might be changing.

The town’s pier committee met this week to discuss the possibility of bringing a consumption zone to the entertainment district.

The consumption zone would allow visitors to walk around a designated area freely with an alcoholic beverage.

While the proposal is in the beginning stages, the committee is taking this time to do its research on other areas in Myrtle Beach that allow open containers.

Neal and Pam’s bartender Shaina Ross said that she would be on board with the proposal because it would make things easier for guests.

The fact that they can travel around the area and you know because Murrells Inlet does their thing down there so why not have it here? We all have a little close net of restaurants,” said Ross.

Tourist Cooper Usry said while it would be nice for him and his friends to walk around with a drink, other people might not feel that way.

I do worry about families who maybe have little children and go to Surfside for a certain experience,” said Ursy.

No decisions have been made yet about the consumption zones in Surfside.

The pier committee will take up the issue again after more research has been conducted.
